5th Day, 5th Way

5.  Take reusable sacks to the store - EVERY store.
It is estimated that one MILLION plastic bags are used every MINUTE.  That's quite a bit of plastic that will eventually end up in a landfill or in the ocean.  Reusable bags seem to be the trend right now, which gives you options.  While many of these bags are still made of plastic, regular usage will cut down on the consumption of one time use bags.  While this challenge seems like a no-brainer, it's not always easy.

A good practice is to keep several of these bags in your car.  They fold up nicely and can be stowed under a seat or in the spare tire compartment.  That way you'll always have them on hand when you are out shopping.  I suggest choosing cloth varieties of reusable bags.  If needed, they can be repaired, and they can be thrown in the washing machine to clean.

Grab one when you're shopping for clothing, at the hardware store, farmers market, garden center, or grocery store.  Wherever you shop, have a reusable bag with you and avoid the plastic.  I keep one folded up in my handbag that is lightweight and small.  It has come in handy many times when I needed to run in the store for a single item.  Take smaller bags for produce in the grocery store.

If you forget, at least choose a paper bag.  Trees are renewable and it only takes paper 2 months to decompose versus 20 years for plastic.  As a bonus, the paper bag can be used for several craft projects.

You're challenge today is to not use a single plastic bag.  Find, make, or purchase reusable bags that can you easily throw in your car for all future purchases.

4.  Use natural dyes for Easter eggs
Being conscious about the footprint you're leaving behind does not mean you have to exclude crafts, and other hobbies.  It simply means coming at them with a different approach.  With Easter approaching this weekend, many families like to dye Easter eggs.  Not only is a great way to gather family and friends, it can be done with items you most likely have around the house.  Using natural dyes on your eggs is a good practice.  Chemicals will not be added to your eggs (if you plan on eating them), nor will they be put down the drain.

Here are a few links on how to make natural dyes.

3rd Day, 3rd Way

3.  Buy from a local business
Today's challenge is to start focusing on where you shop.  Think about your dollar being a voting ballot.  Every time you shop at a major retail chain, you are voting against local business.  While it's not always easy or convenient, spending your money at a local business is stimulating your local economy.  You're saying you want to see the small grocers and retailers remain in your area and not be forced out by large corporations.  My mom does a great job with this.  She too sees many small towns lose all their business to the big chain stores.  For birthdays and holidays she shops local.  Often times, my gifts come from the pharmacy or hardware store in town.  To me, that makes the gift all the more thoughtful.

When you're out shopping today, vote for local business and avoid national
chain establishments all together.  This includes garden centers, hardware stores, restaurants, clothing stores, pharmacies, and grocers.  How many different places would you have to shop to meet all your needs?  What can you adjust in your schedule to make these extras stops?

I realize that it may not be possible to shop local every time you step out of the house.  For example, if you need/want to purchase an item not available in your area, you will have to shop elsewhere.  However, by making the effort to do so when you can, will make a difference.

April 4(for) Green Acres Challenge

These monthly challenges are your opportunity to cultivate your own acres. They are designed to challenge your creativity, test your will power, and pull your awareness to the footstep you are leaving behind.

By participating in these challenges and sharing them with others you are spreading the message. Over time, those around us will be making better choices as well. The goal is not to change how you live your life, but rather think about the implications of those choices and tweek them for the best outcome.

APRIL CHALLENGE: 30 DAYS, 30 WAYS

The month of April marks another Earth Day celebration, and while there will be a cornucopia of ideas out there to get a little greener, May will hit and normalcy will set back in.  Living greener should last for more than a day or a month.  This idea is what started the 4(for) green acres project in the first place.  The notion that cultivating healthy green acres requires more than just recycling.  It is and should be a practice that reconnects you with the natural cycle you play a major role in, regardless if you live in the city or the country.

April's challenge is 30 days filled with 30 ways to make small changes in your life that will last throughout the year.  Simple changes that if we all make, will have a huge impact.  Each day I will post a challenge that will get you to think, connect, share, or step out of the matrix.  If you can't fulfill the challenge that day, save it for another day in April.  By the end of the month you'll have 30 different methods to live your 4(for) green acres every month.  My goal to show you how easy it is so that once you've completed the challenge it will be no big deal to keep that change in your daily routine.

Today's challenge is to make a personal commitment to complete each challenge and start making these practices part of your life every month.  Write yourself a note about why you want to live a more natural, simple life within your community.  Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Technically the month started yesterday, but I usually take the weekends off.  The challenge for yesterday is to start cleaning the air within your home.  Purchase at least one house plant (more is better) and place them throughout your home.  You'd be surprised with how much junk plants filter out of the air.
++++++++++++

Excited about the challenge and want to spread the message? Grab a 4(for) green acres project badge for your blog by using this code to let others know you're growing your own greener acres. I've added the badge to the sidebar as well.
