13th Day, 13th Way

13.  Don't use paper towels
There seems to be mass hysteria over germs today.  Retailers tout the message that disposable paper towels are cleaner than a cloth towel.  In my opinion, not only are they trying to sell their product, and they are doing it by scaring you, it could also be the reason we are all getting sick.  We have become an antiseptic community.  We are too clean, which makes our immune systems weak.  Then, when a contagion does enter the body it doesn't know what to do.  Oh, and then there is the part about throwing all of them in the landfill after one use.

The challenge is to avoid paper towels all together.  In restrooms, you can carry a small quick dry towel with you or air dry.  You can get such a towel in the camping department of any store.  Also, stop using paper towels in your kitchen.  Use only cloth.  When my good wash rags and towels get worn out, I move them over to the rag pile.  Then when I have to clean something up that may stain, I use a rag and the staining doesn't matter.  If your workplace only provides paper towels, bring a hand towel with you to work.  Use it for a week and then take it home to wash.  The goal is to avoid using them whenever possible.  If you do have to use a paper towel, at least throw it in the recycle bin.
