It is estimated that one MILLION plastic bags are used every MINUTE. That's quite a bit of plastic that will eventually end up in a landfill or in the ocean. Reusable bags seem to be the trend right now, which gives you options. While many of these bags are still made of plastic, regular usage will cut down on the consumption of one time use bags. While this challenge seems like a no-brainer, it's not always easy.
A good practice is to keep several of these bags in your car. They fold up nicely and can be stowed under a seat or in the spare tire compartment. That way you'll always have them on hand when you are out shopping. I suggest choosing cloth varieties of reusable bags. If needed, they can be repaired, and they can be thrown in the washing machine to clean.
Grab one when you're shopping for clothing, at the hardware store, farmers market, garden center, or grocery store. Wherever you shop, have a reusable bag with you and avoid the plastic. I keep one folded up in my handbag that is lightweight and small. It has come in handy many times when I needed to run in the store for a single item. Take smaller bags for produce in the grocery store.
If you forget, at least choose a paper bag. Trees are renewable and it only takes paper 2 months to decompose versus 20 years for plastic. As a bonus, the paper bag can be used for several craft projects.
You're challenge today is to not use a single plastic bag. Find, make, or purchase reusable bags that can you easily throw in your car for all future purchases.
