12th Day, 12th Way

12.  Capture household waste water
This challenge is along the same lines as #7.  A lot of wasted water goes down the drain inside your home.  Since you are paying for that water, you might as well save it so you can use it.  Keep an empty jug, bowl or bucket under your sink and use it to collect the excess water.

For example, it takes a long while for my water to get hot in the kitchen sink.  I obviously want to wash my dishes in hot water, so I have to let it run to get it hot.  When I started collecting all that cold water I realized that I was letting 3 gallons go down the drain!  If I washed dishes every day for a week and didn't capture the excess water I'd be letting 21 gallons go down the drain.  Once I collect the water, I then dump the jugs in the rain barrel outside for later use.  So, try it for a day to determine your impact.  This includes water in any sink, bath or shower.

11.  Air dry your laundry
10.  Avoid plastic-ware
9.  Don't throw anything away
8.  Get off the grid for a day

6.  Limit Energy Consumption
5.  Take reusable sacks to the store - Every store
4.  Use natural dyes for Easter eggs
3.  Buy from a local business
2.  Make a commitment to the challenge.

  1. I keep a watering can next to my sink. I dump out all our left over water from our drinking glasses. I use the water to water the flowers on our porch. Free water is the best. :)

I was doing the same when I let the shower run to warm out. Turns out carrying a gallon of water (three times for each shower) from the bathroom, through the bedroom and the living room every time I showered was not fun. That lasted about 2 weeks before I just had to let it go. Yikes.
